This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
