Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
